Call me Cassandra but there is nothing wrong with this economy, or the future of the economy that cannot be fixed easily by creating several million jobs.
That is job number one. Without full employment, even make-work employment if necessary...and it seems to be...we cannot begin to make intelligent assertions about our economic future.
With five million new jobs, the entire composite of society would change. Attitudes would change. Even those who spend more on an election to the Senate than they would ever consider donating to starving Africans would change.
Because, with employment comes hope, comes intelligent planning, comes strategic thinking.
None of that is evident now in any proposals by anyone in government.
Jobs, paraphrasing a great man, are not everything...they are the only thing. At least right now they are.
That is why all this economic posturing is so shallow. We know our major economic figures are not stupid and they are quite well educated.
But when ego and ideology challenge the facts, in a society well on its way to Fascism, the facts often suffer.
We need as close to full employment as we can get. Then, everything else will fall into place.
Period.
